The first step in Carlos Alcaraz’s quest to win a fourth Davis Cup title was accomplished when he was handed the role of captain on Wednesday night when he led Serbia against Russia in the finals. The last thing he needed then was to get a chance to play in the finals, but he said he was thrilled and happy to have the opportunity.
He was still a little nervous, too, after being left out in the first round. He said he thought a couple of players would not be around until the semifinals, but as it turns out, two of his players were missing.
“Of the eight players that played the first round, we didn’t have a couple of them in the first round because of travel,” he said. “So for the last two matches, we had to play without them. We weren’t really sure how they would react to the pressure and the attention and attention after the first round and then the next round and then the finals.”
Alcaraz said his players were excited for the opportunity to play in another round of the competition. He said that one of them was a little bit nervous for a change, but they were more nervous in the semifinals because they know what it takes to get there.
“So it will be more exciting for me to play in the finals,” he said. “I was a little bit nervous for a change because we didn’t play in the first round, it was the first time that I have been a part of the playoffs.
