Why?: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors (LACBS) on Tuesday unanimously approved Los Angeles County Measure C, a proposed ordinance that would allow county-run sales of medical marijuana for patients with certain medical conditions.
The measure would authorize the Board of Supervisors to set rules for county-run sales. The Board of Supervisors can authorize the Board of Public Utilities to open new regulated stores or expand existing ones if it so chooses.
L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis (D), who is also co-chair of the board of supervisors’ cannabis task force, joined the board to approve the measure.
“It is critical for our LACBS to move forward with this important measure, as it will remove one major barrier to our patients trying to access medical marijuana,” Solis said in a statement. “It will finally allow them the option of taking the medicine that has been helping them get better over the past two decades, and we all have to do this.”
As a result of the measure, L.A. County customers who apply for a medical marijuana card would only be able to purchase cannabis from regulated establishments. The county and the city can expand the authority to sell medical marijuana if they choose to do so.
