Mike Garcia, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, spoke on the radio today about the national debt, his role as a liaison on the new Department of Homeland Security, and other issues. He was joined on the radio by California Republican Rep. Mike Kelly, who is looking to replace retiring Republican Sen. Barbara Boxer of California. Both were interviewed by San Francisco-based KQED talk radio host Don Lemon.

On the issues: Mike Garcia and Christy Smith on abortion, economy, gun laws (and more) – As a state senator in northern California, Garcia is a pro-choice advocate. “I think abortion should be legal, but I absolutely do not believe in the killing of an unborn child,” he said. “I am in favor of choice. I believe that there should be an exception when a life is in danger — when for example if a woman has a fatal illness in pregnancy, the doctors are not able to determine how that fetus will impact her life.”

On the issues: Mike Garcia and Christy Smith on abortion, economy, gun laws (and more) – On the issue of the national debt, Garcia said he wants to end the practice of making permanent some of the nation’s debt spending programs while giving more flexibility to lawmakers to decide how to cut spending. He wants to do away with current law that requires a presidential waiver in order to increase the debt ceiling. The plan is to eliminate that waiver requirement.
