NEW YORK — Rafael Nadal withdrew from the WTA’s first Grand Slam since the birth of his 10-year-old son last week due to “personal reasons.”

The world’s top-ranked tennis player issued the statement from his home in Spain on Thursday, hours after posting an Instagram video saying he was “unable to compete at the highest level.”

Nadal is playing the first Grand Slam event of the year, the Bank of the West Classic in her hometown of Medinah, Ill., starting Friday. He had been set to play in the tournament as part of a 16-man Spanish Davis Cup team.
