Serena Williams: ‘I think she’s going to do great’

Serena Williams says she believes Simona Halep is going to do great and is excited by the prospect of facing her.

The two-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medallist said in an interview with the Guardian on Monday that she believes Halep is innocent and is not at all worried that she will be banned for her potential involvement in performance enhancing drugs.

Asked if she believed Halep was innocent, Williams said: ‘I believe she’s going to do great. She is going to do great.

‘No one is ever innocent until proven guilty. But Simona and I have been talking since she got into the sport. We have been talking literally since day one. It’s always been about her, it’s always been about what she means to me.’

The news followed an earlier statement from the WTA stating that no disciplinary action will be taken against Halep for her alleged PEDs, a statement that was quickly contradicted by WTA president Stacey Allaster.

‘This is a developing story. It will be dealt with today or tomorrow,’ Allaster said on Tuesday, before later issuing a retraction.

Allaster issued a statement on the WTA Facebook page which read: “In an effort to set the record straight, the WTA has issued the following statement about Simona Halep’s allegations.

‘As a result, WTA will not have further comment at this time.’

Williams, the world number one who made the controversial decision to take banned-substance performance-enhancing drugs throughout 2012 and 2013, described the allegations against Halep as ‘a crazy story’.

‘I think she’s going to do great and I’m excited about it,’ Williams added.
