1 dead, 4 wounded in Italy supermarket stabbing spree in Turin

A lone knife-wielding man carried out a stabbing spree at two Italian supermarkets and a bakery in a rampage that lasted about two hours.

At least two people were killed as a result of the attack in Turin, in the northern Italian region of Liguria, late on Thursday. The fourth was wounded in the stomach, local police reported.

The man, an unemployed 30-year-old who has a history of mental problems, entered one supermarket after another armed with the two blades he carried with him. He stabbed a customer and a police officer who tried to stop him.

As he was being chased by officers, he managed to flee, and two more people were killed as a result of the attack, including a man who was waiting outside a supermarket for a colleague to pick up a car he had parked there.

Three men – including one police officer – were wounded in the attack, two of them seriously, and are in hospital.

The victims have been named as:

The first victim, a 39-year-old security guard, was stabbed in the lower abdomen and survived.

The second victim, a 39-year-old man, was stabbed in his neck and chest and died on Friday morning.

Another police officer was stabbed in the stomach and was taken to hospital, where he is said to be in a critical condition, police said.

A 29-year-old man, a police officer, was stabbed in the stomach and was taken to hospital as a precaution, also with life-threatening wounds. He was later transferred to the Sanatorio Ospedaliero della Pietra, a specialist burn centre, where he remains in a critical condition.

Police arrested a man and a woman, but did not release details about their identities.

The police prosecutor said the man, who was not named, was suspected of having the weapons and ammunition, which were recovered at the scene.
