Nadal and Fognini were a long way from first time round, and Nadal did enough to send Fabio home and, although the match was a thriller, it didn’t appear to be the start of a new era of tennis in the U.S.
In this, the first round in the U.S. Open, Nadal started on the outside, but after a couple of break points, he was in the middle, and this is where he proved his credentials as a tough test on the clay.
Fognini started to open his account and after breaking Nadal’s serve a couple of times after breaking his back twice, he managed to level at four-all after hitting an ace and then taking a quick double-break back to break back.
After that, Fognini tried to impose his game on the world number one, and after serving up a couple of double-breaks, he eventually broke. But he couldn’t find his rhythm on the next set, and he was eventually broken again to go down 6-4, 6-4.
After that, Nadal used the next two sets to break back and win the first set, then he broke Fognini and won the next two.
